Barely a pinprick on a map, Alden is tiny.\u00a0 \u00a0Alan and I\u00a0had often passed right through on our way to somewhere seemingly more exciting. With a population of just 125 people, it is easy to believe that there is not much there.\u00a0\u00a0Opening the atlas\u00a0we decided\u00a0this was the nearest \u201cA\u201d themed location, to our home. Determined to\u00a0find something of interest in this sleepy little town we traveled for nearly an hour, specifically to see it. Entering the four block long town, colorful signs announce that you have arrived, but blink and you will have traveled beyond the few stores and restaurants that\u00a0reside in the restored buildings,\u00a0dating from the 1800&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047776.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-192\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047776-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P7047776\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nestled beneath a canopy of trees, <a title=\"Alden, Michigan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitalden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">Alden<\/span><\/a> is a perfect example of small town U.S.A.\u00a0 It warmly welcomes you to slow down, enjoy an ice cream cone and savor a warm summer day in Michigan. Continuing at an unhurried pace, it is an easy stroll down to the nearby harbor. The crystal clear, Caribbean blue colored waters of Torch Lake call to visitors and residents alike. Described by National Geographic to be the world\u2019s third most beautiful lake in the world, it\u00a0is an ideal\u00a0place to fish, boat, swim and stay a while.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Torch-Lake-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-186\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Torch-Lake-1.png\" alt=\"Torch Lake 1\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A bit more research reveals that there is plenty to do here.\u00a0 Housing a museum, a miniature railroad display, restored train cars and a picnic area, the newly restored Alden Depot and park will\u00a0entertain little ones and railroad buffs alike. Or, perhaps as we chose to do,\u00a0bird watching and hiking at the nearby <a title=\"Grass River Natural Area\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grassriver.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">Grass River Natural Area<\/span><\/a> would be more to your liking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-189\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047770-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"P7047770\" width=\"318\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047769.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-188\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047769-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P7047769\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047777.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-193\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047777-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P7047777\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047766.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-187\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/P7047766-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"P7047766\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However you choose to spend the day, be sure to stop at this little haven, called the Mill House.\u00a0 Appropriately, there is a\u00a0non functioning water mill attached to the side of the building.\u00a0\u00a0Located on the curve, heading out of town, this special place\u00a0is a combined garden center and kitchen store.\u00a0 Quickly we dubbed this one\u00a0of our favorite stores, when upon stepping Inside we found an eclectic mix of items for sale, including the famous Pepper Mill Spices, which are packaged and distributed right here.\u00a0 As we exited the building, our only decision to make for the remainder of this day was which flower lined path we would choose to walk along or which adjoining garden we wanted to stroll through.\u00a0 Alden is the kind of place you want to keep a secret.
