is for &#8220;Ketchikan&#8221;-Alaska"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Copy-1-ofDSC_0845.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-427\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Copy-1-ofDSC_0845-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"Copy (1) ofDSC_0845\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking for information about Creek Street,\u00a0my reasearch about this famous location in Ketchikan, Alaska, quickly led me to\u00a0a\u00a0sordid history\u00a0of protitution and bootlegging!\u00a0 Today,\u00a0along the banks of Ketchikan Creek, there exists only a\u00a0quaint collection of historical buildings, boardwalks and wooden palings,\u00a0 Tourists have replaced the bootleggers and now\u00a0flock by the thousands to\u00a0the brightly painted buildings which contain\u00a0galleries, restaurants and specialty shops.\u00a0\u00a0Some of the earliest buildings date back to 1903.\u00a0\u00a0Back then, this\u00a0area looked\u00a0vastly different,\u00a0containing only a few brothels as well as a shingle mill, a cooperage and several water wheels\u00a0which\u00a0used the power of the creek to generate electricity.\u00a0\u00a0From the 1920&#8217;s to the 1950&#8217;s, prostitution was so popular that the there were 20 bawdy houses in this area alone!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Copy-1-ofDSC_0850.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-429\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Copy-1-ofDSC_0850-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Copy (1) ofDSC_0850\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>At the time,\u00a0prostitution\u00a0was Ketchikan&#8217;s number one industry.\u00a0 In fact,\u00a0it was so popular that it inspired a saying; &#8220;Creek Street is where more men, than fish, went upstream to spawn!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These days, the best viewing areas for spawning can only be found at the end of Married Man?s Trail,\u00a0a path located along the edge of Creek Street.\u00a0 Here you can pause near the salmon ladder.\u00a0 This is a great place to\u00a0observe and photograph\u00a0the salmon jumping up the\u00a0cascading waterfall on their continuing\u00a0journey upstream.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Copy-1-ofDSC_0853.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-428\" src=\"http:\/\/abcexplorers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Copy-1-ofDSC_0853-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"Copy (1) ofDSC_0853\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Creek Street is built over the water and\u00a0on stilt structures.\u00a0\u00a0Early settlers found this\u00a0was easier than blasting into the solid granite that the structures now lean\u00a0upon.\u00a0\u00a0During prohibition, Creek Street was the place to go for a drink. \u00a0Most of the houses have a hidden trap door.\u00a0 Bootleggers used this to their advantage.\u00a0 They\u00a0 waited for high tide, then under a cloak of darkness, they would quietly\u00a0row their rowboats up under the doors as they smuggled Canadian whiskey to the \u00a0saloons and supply houses!\u00a0\u00a0The only thing we saw swimming under the buildings was a lone seal looking for salmon!<\/p>\n<p>Creek Street is one of Ketchikan&#8217;s best attractions.\u00a0 If you are coming by ship, depending on where you dock, it can be\u00a0a little bit of a hike from the piers.\u00a0Still, come rain or shine, this is an area not to be missed!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to this area might also find the following links useful:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.experienceketchikan.com\/ketchikan-maps.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Ketchikan Maps<\/span><\/span><\/a> &#8211;
